Sometimes the most minimal of advertising can be successful…take Julie and Kevin Moynihan for instance. They found me from the insert I put into the welcome bags of the 2013 Newport Wedding Expo; I couldn’t attend in person due to a wedding I had booked for that same day. This laid back and easy going couple is delightful, and on a sunny and warm June the 6th, 2014, I had the pleasure of photographing their big day!
This happy duo chose the serene setting of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Newport, RI for their nuptials, located on historic Goat Island. This little slice of heaven, connected to the mainland by a single causeway, got its name from the goats that used to graze there long ago. It now serves as the lucky location for the Hyatt and just a few other structures.
Julie and Kevin both got ready at the hotel. My assistant Niall Commane and I arrived in time to witness Kevin and his groomsmen playing frisbee and drinking beer, a testament to just how cool and collected this couple really is. We headed into the bridal suite to capture Julie and her bridesmaids as they got ready; Julie in her strapless flowing gown, the ladies in full length pink ones with pink bouquets to match. The beautiful bride got teary as she read a pre-wedding letter from her intended and opened his gift of gorgeous jewelry.
Adorned in gray suits, Kevin and his groomsmen were a perfect complement to the ladies. After Kevin read Julie’s pre-wedding letter as well, we went to photograph the couples “first glance”. They chose to do this at the islands celebrated 200 year old lighthouse, where we took many portrait photos of the couple and their bridal party. We also got some lovely shots of the group in front of the iconic Newport bridge and Narragansett Bay.
The ceremony, outside by the lighthouse, was made even more special by being presided over by Julie’s brother. Smiles, vows, rings and kiss led to an immediate cocktail hour and then into the Rose Island Room of the Hyatt for the reception. I stole Julie and Kevin for a few more moments more to take some sunset shots and then returned to capture more fun. This included cutting the “cake”, which was actually an impressive tower of cupcakes, and Kevin using a football to throw the garter to all the single men in attendance.
Before everyone knew it the night was over and the couple was off on their beautiful honeymoon. My thanks to Julie and Kevin, they were a joy to work with and I wish them the best of luck!
